Egyptian film The Giraffe (La Ahad Hunak) will be screened at Darb 1718 on 12 May.

The directorial debut of actor Ahmed Magdy, the film had its Arab premiere at the current Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), screening in the Critic Week competition alongside six other international films.

Giraffe is Magdy's first feature film after three short documentaries and a notable, if nascent, acting career.

Magdy also wrote the script for the film, which stars Amr Hosny, Shaza Moharram, Haidy Qousa, Salma Hassan, Rasha Magdy, Mohamed El-Badawy and Osama Gawesh.

The story follows Ahmed, who is lost and faithless in a ghostly city.

According to the CIFF synopsis, "He must save a girl he doesn't know by getting her enough money to have an abortion. Ahmed is swallowed into the madness of the city as he embarks on a surreal journey. He finds himself involved with an eccentric group of young people led by an enigmatic girl trying to uncover the mystery behind the giraffe hidden at the zoo."

The Marrakesh Film Festival is an important regional festival, founded in 2001. This year it will honour several iconic names in cinema, including Egyptian director Yousry Nasrallah, American actor Robert De Niro, and American director Martin Scorsese.
