Art Alert: 'We Are Data' talks and screenings at Cimatheque
Ahram Online, Wednesday 15 May 2019
The event is a collaboration between Cairotronica and the Netherlands' Impakt project

Egypt's Cairotronica and The Netherlands' Impakt are presenting a programme of talks and screenings on 16 May at Cimatheque.

Titled 'We Are Data', the event aims "to connect researchers, technology experts, engineers and academics with artists and designers to generate more attention for the question of 'why' we use new technologies, instead of the more traditional and technical 'how' approach," the event description reads.

The panel will strive to spark discussion to analyse and better understand questions such as: What is Data? How is our data being collected? What are the methodologies, tools and resources of data collection and archiving of data? What are the myths around data? How we can support creativity, autonomy and agency in these processes?

The public panel will open with a keynote by Dutch visual artist Coralie Vogelaar and an introduction by Arjon Dunnewind from Impakt.

Two short films will be screened; 2002 French film Remind Me by Ludovic Houplan, Hervé de Crécy and Röyksopp, and 2016 Colombian film Hyper Reality by Keiichi Matsuda.

The evening will conclude with a panel discussion featuring Dutch designer, media artist and creative coder Sabrina Verhage, alongside Egyptian architect Amr Abdel-Kawi of NextARCH Lab, American University in Cairo.

Cairotronica is an International Symposium of Electronic and New Media arts in Cairo, aiming to become an international hub and platform for electronic art in the Middle East. Its second edition was held in 2018 across different venues in Cairo, featuring an academic conference as well as workshops and an international exhibition of new media arts.

Impakt is a Dutch organisation founded in 1988, concerned with media culture and innovative audiovisual arts. It organises the annual Impakt Festival, alongside smaller events year-round as well as a production house and residency programme for artists and curators.

We Are Data is part of an ongoing collaboration between Cairotronica and Impakt, aiming to integrate new technologies with art and design practices and create a platform for an interdisciplinary community.

Programme:
Thursday 16 May at 9pm to 11pm
Cimathque, 19a Adly Street, Downtown, Cairo
