The Cairo Puppet Theatre is putting on performances of El-Leila El-Kebira for 15 nights at the Hanager open air theatre (Cairo Opera House grounds), which will be free charge, starting Saturday 17 May.

The theatre's offer comes as part of the Hal-Helalak special programme celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.

El-Leila El-Kebira (The Grand Night), which debuted in the 1960s, is the most well-known Egyptian marionette operetta of all time.

The original musical was composed by Sayed Mekawy, lyrics by poet Salah Jahin, puppets by artist Nagy Shaker, and directed by Salah El-Sakka.

The musical has seen many adaptations over the decades, including The Cairo Opera Ballet Company’s version created by Abdel-Moneim Kamel in 2001, where puppets turn into live dancers.

Also, during Ramadan, at the National Theatre in Ataba, downtown Cairo, Assem Nagaty's play Yaeish Ahl Balady (Long Live My Compatriots) resumes on 16 May.

Meanwhile, Tarnimat Al-Fallah Al-Fasih (The Hymns of The Wise Peasant) has been staging daily since 10 May at Al-Masrah Al-Ayem (The Floating Theater) in Manial.

Many Arab and Egyptian music performances are being hosted in various venues in many governorates across the nation to mark the holy month.
