Zamalek coach Christian Gross said he was happy to restore the glory days of the Cairo giants after they clinched the African Confederation Cup title on Sunday, hailing a "wonderful night" in Alexandria.
The White Knights won their first ever Confed Cup title with a 5-3 shootout victory over Morocco's RS Berkane after a second-half penalty from Mahmoud Alaa levelled the aggregate score at 1-1.
Swiss boss Gross enjoyed his first title at the helm, with Zamalek also chasing the Premier League and Egypt Cup crowns.
"We are all very happy, of course. I'm happy for my players also for the fans of Zamalek. We had a wonderful night; it's fantastic to play in front of a crowd like this," he told the post-match news conference, referring to a sell-out crowd at Alexandria's 86,000-seat Borg El-Arab Stadium.
It marks the first continental title for the five-time Champions League winners since they beat Morocco's Wydad Casablanca in the 2003 African Super Cup.
"It was important to bring the giants back to their deserved place," Gross added.
He also said his side needed to immediately focus on the tasks ahead in the two domestic competitions. They will go top of the league with a one-point lead over perennial rivals Ahly should they win their rescheduled matches, having also reached the cup quarter-final.
"The season is not finished for us, we need to go back to work tomorrow," he said.
