Art Alert: Egyptian guitarist and Granada musicians to perform Flamenco at Cairo Opera

In an evening titled 'My Path to Flamenco,' Egyptian guitarist Ali Khattab is performing with the most prestigious flamenco artists of Granada


Egyptian guitarist and composer Ali Khattab and four musicians from Spain will perform aselection of the most outstanding flamenco styles during an evening titled 'My Path to Flamenco,' which will be held at the Cairo Opera House's small hall on Sunday 23 June.

Khattab, born in 1977, has spent many years of his professional career dedicated to Andalusian music.

In his twenties, Khattab visited Andalusia where he met influential guitarists, singers and dancers who introduced him to Andalusian music and inspired his exploration so the style. Khattab incorporated his own skills and knowledge in his performances and compositions, which fall under what is known as the "flamenco árabe" style.

Khattab has released two albums,Al Zarqa (Nuevos Medios 2010) and Sin País(Nesma Music 2014), and has won several awards and critical acclaim in Spain, Europe and the US.

The Spanish musicians accompanying Khattab during the evening include Niño Carmelo on guitar, El Cheyenne on percussion, in addition to El Turry singing and Luis de Luis dancing.

The evening's programme will include many of Khattab's own compositions such as Sueño claro (taranta), Al Zarqa (solea), Laila (fantasia), Mawlana (buleria),Al Darwish (tango), Alejandra (alegría), Almuñecar (rumba), Maestro (bulería).

The concert is a collaboration betweenThe Cultural Section of the Spanish Embassy in Cairo and theCairo Opera house within the activities promoting Flamenco as an Intangible CulturalHeritage of Humanity, according the Spanish embassy's official press release.
