Ahly extend loan of influential winger Ramadan Sobhi for one more season

Ahly have extended Ramadan Sobhi's loan deal for one more season to keep hold of one of their prized assets as they bid for a fourth straight Egyptian Premier league title, the club announced on Friday.

The 22-year-old winger spent the second half of the season at Ahly, joining from English side Huddersfield Town on a six-month loan deal.

Ahly risked losing him in the crucial part of the league season after the deal expired at the end of June, with the domestic competition scheduled to conclude a month later. The Cairo giants currently top the table and will be crowned champions if they win their remaining two games.

Talks between Ahly and Huddersfield initially looked to have hit a stumbling block, but both sides were eventually able to iron out an agreement that will see the Red Devils pay a reported fee of £1.6 million plus add-ons if the team win either the domestic league or the African Champions League

The talented winger is a key player in coach Martin Lasarte's lineup, providing much-needed strength and creativity to the front-line.

Sobhi, who came through the youth ranks of Ahly and made his senior team debut in February 2014, was seen as one of the hottest prospects in Egyptian football and started his European journey in 2016 at Stoke City after winning two Egyptian Premier League titles and a CAF Confederation Cup trophy.

He made 46 appearances in two seasons, scoring three goals and creating three others before leaving Stoke after they were relegated to the second division to join Huddersfield.

He failed to settle in though and made only four appearances in the 2018-2019 season before returning to Ahly.
