Ahly football team headed on Saturday morning to Spain to start a training camp amid preparations for the new season and the two remaining matches of the Egyptian Premier League.

"The 34-man squad headed to Spain to start the training camp that lasts until 16 July," reads a statement on the club's official website.

"The camp includes playing three friendly matches on 8, 11 and 15 July," the statement added.

The Egyptian league is currently suspended due to the national team’s participation in the African Cup of Nations and will be resumed after the prestigious tournament concludes on 19 July.

Holders Ahly currently lead the Egyptian Premier League table with 74 points from 32 matches with two matches to spare, while archrivals Zamalek lie 3rd with 68 points from 31 matches.

When the league resumes, the Reds will be facing Arab Contractors and rivals Zamalek in the two reaming matches, and coach Martin Lasarte hopes the team will be in the best shape after the camp.

"The timing of the camp is very important. We will try to make the best use of the facilities to get the most benefit from the camp," said Lasarte.

"It will be a good chance to enhance both the technical and physical levels as we want to get the players in their best form for the coming matches," he added.

On Wednesday, Ahly held to a 0-0 draw in a friendly match against Al-Motaheda team.
