Egypt put up a brave fight but failed to reach the U21 World Championship final after a narrow 35-33 loss to France on Saturday.

France took a 19-16 halftime lead and increased that gap in the second half, only for Egypt to storm back and level the score at 31-31 in the dying minutes.

However, France had the upper hand at the end, eliminating Egypt and depriving them of the chance to reach their first final since 1993 when they made history by winning the trophy at home.

The Pharaohs produced some impressive displays in the group stage, becoming the first non-European team to win all their group matches since 2009.

They beat Serbia 30-29 in an exciting contest in the round of 16 before defeating Norway 29-27 in the quarters.
