RELIVE: Huge explosion heard in central Cairo

Health minister Hala Zayed told private satellite Extra News that the death toll of the deadly explosion rose to 17.
32 people were injured, according to Zayed.

1:40 am
Egypt’s General Prosecutor dispatched members of the prosecution to the site of the explosion to determine causes.

At least 16 people were killed and 21 injured after a huge blast struck the vicinity of the country’s National Cancer Institute locates in central Cairo, medical sources told AO.
Health ministry said 25 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, with minister Hala el-Zayed set to arrive to Nasser Institute to follow up with the conditions of the injured.

#Cairo University, which manages the NCI, said that the #blast took place after a car moving in the opposite direction collided with a number of the institute’s vehicles.
The media office of the university refuted reports that the explosion occurred inside the institute.
Civil protection forces and ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene, the university has said.

#Explosion in central Cairo is not related to the National Cancer Institute, an official source tells Ahram Online

A least one person was killed and others injured after a blast inside National Cancer Institute in central Cairo’s Al Manial neighborhood.
Eyewitnesses in nearby areas said they a heard a loud explosion, with others posting images and videos of huge smoke and fire erupting from the scene.
The reason behind the fire remains unclear, however several media reports earlier said blast came due to an explosion in one of the institution’s oxygen tank.
