Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) released a statement on its official Facebook page on Sunday thanking Egyptians for going to work on Saturday and not answering calls by revolutionary political forces for a nationwide general strike to protest military rule.

In its statement, the SCAF compared the public’s rejection of the appeal to strike to a national referendum, which, it said, “had revealed the importance of work to the Egyptian people who chose to go to work on Saturday instead of striking.”

Over 50 political groups, including the country’s six most prominent revolutionary movements – in addition to some university and school students and independent workers’ unions – had issued calls for a nationwide strike to demand the immediate handover of executive power from the SCAF to a civil authority. The planned strike was timed to coincide with the first anniversary of former president Hosni Mubarak's 11 February ouster.

Reports indicate that few workers or employees ended up taking part in the strike, although some university student groups did reportedly participate in the action.
