Egyptian police killed 11 terrorists in North Sinai's El-Arish during a raid on their hideout, a statement by the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

The terrorists were killed after shooting at police as they attempted to apprehend them at their hideout in a farm in El-Arish's El-Obour area.

Police seized a number of weapons, including five rifles, a FN firearm, a pistol, two explosive devices, and a suicide belt.

Egypt has been battling Islamist terrorists in North Sinai for several years. Terrorist attacks have mostly targeted security forces, particularly at military and police checkpoints.

Egypt launched Operation Sinai 2018 in February to target "terrorist and criminal elements and organisations" in northern and central Sinai, as well as parts of the Nile Delta and the Western Desert, the army said at the start of the operation.

Hundreds of terrorists have been killed in the intensive campaign.
