Defending champions Esperance are close to sealing a place in the African Champions League group stage following a 1-1 draw away to Chad's Elect-Sport FC on Sunday.

New recruit Fedi Ben Choug fired Esperance ahead six minutes past the hour mark in the first leg of the Champions League second round before Elect-Sport brought the score level in the 74th minute.

Five-time winners TP Mazembe and fellow DR Congo side Vita Club are also favourites to go through after playing out 0-0 draws at Madagascar's Fosa Juniors and Togo's Kara respectively.

Elsewhere, Etoile Sahel's hopes to reach the group stage suffered a blow after they slumped to a 2-0 loss at Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in Kumasi.

Attacking midfielder Augustine Okrah opened the scoring as early as the second minute and striker Richard Arthur doubled their lead in the 56th minute.

Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, last season's runners-up, earned a first-leg advantage by beating Mauritania's Nouadhibou 2-0 away from home.
