Hossam El-Badry succeeds to Mexican coach Javier Aguirre as head coach of Egypt's National Team

The Egyptian Football Association appointed former Ahly player and coach Hossam El-Badry as Egypt's national team manager on Thursday.

According to a statement on the EFA website on Thursday, the 59-year-old will succeed Mexican coach Javier Aguirre, who was sacked last July following the Pharaohs' shock elimination from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 held at home.

"During our meeting on 18 September, we decided to appoint Hossam El-Badry as head coach for the national team and to choose his staff to be presented to the board," the statement read.

El-Badry is the first Egyptian manager in Egypt's hot seat in four years following Argentinean tactician Hector Cuper (2015-2018) and Aguirre (2018-2019)

The decision marks the end of a long saga following weeks of debates regarding the new coach of Egypt.

Following instructions from Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in August to name an Egyptian manager, the EFA announced a five-man shortlist for the job.

Egypt's iconic manager Hassan Shehata, former Tottenham and Ajax striker Ahmed "Mido" Hossam, Egypt's legendary striker Hossam Hassan, Masry coach Ihab Galal and El-Badry made the final cut.

Galal seemed to be leading the race over the past few days, but negotiations collapsed due to disagreement over his coaching staff. Early on Thursday he announced that he declined the offer and will be remaining at Masry.

El-Badry's career

El-Badry, who made 18 appearances for Egypt as a player, made his playing career with Ahly for nine seasons between 1978 to 1987.

Then he made his debut in his coaching career in 2001 under his mentor Portuguese coach Manuel Jose, who considered the most successful coach in Ahly's history after leading the Red Devils to 21 titles including four Champions League trophies.

He took over Ahly's job on three occasions in 2009-2010, 2012-2013 and 2016-2018, winning four Premier League titles and a Champions League in 2012. He also coached Enppi, Ahly of Tripoli and Al-Merrikh, leading the Sudanese giants to the league title in 2012.

However, he left Ahly after being appointed as chairman of Pyramids FC, who became Ahly's nemesis last season under the chairmanship of former Saudi sports minister Turki Al-Sheikh.

El-Badry, who had an unsuccessful experience at the helm of Egypt U23 after failing to qualify for Rio 2016, has been away from the field since leaving Ahly in 2018, but recently he has announced his will to resume his coaching career.

El-Badry's first competitive match is expected to be in October as there is a FIFA date for international games between 7 and 15 October.
