CAF sets new date for Zamalek-Generation Foot abandoned clash

Both sides will meet on 24 October at a yet-to-be-determined stadium after their previous African Champions League clash was called off

Zamalek's Champions League clash at home to Generation Foot, which was called off last month after the Senegalese side failed to show up, will still be held on 24 October, African governing body CAF said on Tuesday.

Both sides were originally scheduled to meet in Cairo on 28 September in the second leg of the competition's second round but CAF agreed in a letter sent to Zamalek to postpone the match for one day upon the Egyptian club's request, given security concerns in the capital.

But citing CAF's regulations which require the approval of the visiting team in case of any such short-notice changes, Generation Foot decided not to play the match at Alexandria's Borg El-Arab Stadium on 29 September.

On that day, Zamalek warmed up normally before the game and waited for the visiting team to show up. The referee called off the match 15 minutes after the scheduled kick-off time (20:00).

Zamalek were hoping to be awarded a walkover win on the grounds that CAF had already accepted their request to change the game's date. Generation Foot, who were barred entry to Cairo's Petrosport Stadium on the original date of the match, also insisted that they deserved to go through.

"Zamalek will confirm the venue (stadium) for the game by Saturday 12 October at the latest," CAF said in a statement on its official website following a meeting of its competitions committee.

"CAF will advance the international travel and local accommodation expenses of Generation Foot and relevant match officials.A further review of the case will be carried out by the CAF Disciplinary Committee in relation to aspects relevant to its competencies."

Generation Foot sprang a surprise by beating five-time Champions League winners Zamalek 2-1 at home in the first leg.
