The Swedish Embassy in Cairo has awarded Amr Moussa, the prominent politician and Egypt’s former minister of foreign affairs, the insignia of Commander First Class of the Swedish Royal Order of the Polar Star.

Swedish Ambassador to Cairo Jan Thesleff presented Moussa, also a former chief of the Arab League, the insignia on behalf of the King of Sweden at the ambassador’s residence in Cairo Tuesday.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star is a Swedish order of chivalry created by King Frederick I in 1748.

The insignia may be conferred only on foreign nationals in recognition of services paid and the promotion of good relations with the Kingdom of Sweden.

The motto of the order is “Nescit Occasum,” Latin for "It knows no decline,” referring to the Polar Star which is fixed.

“Sweden and Egypt maintain close bilateral relations that go back centuries. The two counties are collaborating in various areas such as development and security, gender equality, energy, transport and cultural exchange. Under Sweden’s commitment to Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, Sweden is working closely with the Egyptian government and the private sector, including more than 40 Swedish companies active in Egypt, to build new strong platforms for cooperation," according to a Swedish embassy statement.
