Egypt sent to Saudi Arabia documents on drug case where Egyptian has been sentenced to death: Prosecution
The Egyptian general prosecution has sent to authorities in Saudi Arabia all the documents detailing the case against the alleged drug smugglers who sent a shipment of narcotic pills from Egypt to an Egyptian engineer living in the Arab kingdom, whom a Saudi court has sentenced to death.
Egyptian engineer Ali Abul-Qasim, who had worked in Saudi Arabia since 2007, was sentenced to death in 2017 in a first degree decision after being convicted on charges of drug trafficking.
A previous statement by the Egyptian immigration ministry said that the smugglers who sent the drugs have confessed to the crime and have said that Abul-Qasim was not involved in the plot. The ministry added that it is sparing no effort to prove Abul-Qasim's innocence.
According to Abul-Qasim's wife Ibtesam Salama, her husband had no knowledge that the shipment of engineering equipment he received was concealing drugs.
Egypt's immigration ministry said in a statement issued on Thursday that the case against Abul-Qasim is being considered by a Saudi higher court, and dismissed any reports that the case has been suspended or retried.
The statement added that Egyptian authorities spare no effort in following up on the cases of Egyptian citizens tried for capital crimes abroad, and that Immigration Minister Nabila Makram, Prosecutor-General Hamada El-Sawy, and legal advisor in Saudi Arabia Hamdi Al-Hilali are following up on the case upon directives from Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.
The ministry also stressed that criminal cases are always treated in accordance to each country's law, and that it has confidence in the fairness of the Saudi justice system.
