"Turkey's military operation in northeastern Syria has only one name 'invasion or aggression' that it cannot be passed by any country in the world, whatever the justification," Abul-Gheit said

The Secretary-General of the Arab league (AL) Ahmed Abul-Gheit said on Saturday that the Turkish aggression on Syria was a threat to Arab national security.

Abul-Gheit's remarks came during a closed emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers at the headquarters of the AL in Cairo on Saturday.

The emergency meeting was called by Egypt to discuss the Arab response to the Turkish military aggression in northeast Syria.

"Turkey's military operation in northeastern Syria has only one name 'invasion or aggression' that it cannot be passed by any country in the world, whatever the justification," Abul-Gheit said.

The secretary-general of the AL was quoted by AP as saying that Turkey's military operation in northern Syria had resulted in a new wave of displacement and jeopardised "achievements'' made in fighting the Islamic State group.

He also called on Turkey to "halt its military offensive in Syria and pull out its forces from the war-torn country."

During the meeting, Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reiterated Egypt's condemnation of the Turkish aggression on Syria and the Turkish occupation of Syrian territories.

Shoukry also pointed out that Egypt rejected the interventions that led to destabilising the region, and called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility to stop that aggression immediately.

On 9 October, Turkey started a military operation against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the Kurdish YPG as its main fighting element, in northeast Syria to establish a so-called "safe Zone" for Turkey 35 kilometres into Syrian territory.

Egypt condemned Turkey's attack and described it as a "blatant and unacceptable attack" on the sovereignty of an Arab state.
