Art Alert: Simsimiya girl band Amwag to perform first concert at El-Dammah Theatre

The eight-girls-strong band Amwag specializes in reviving Suez Canal zone traditional music of simsimya


Egyptian folkloric band Amwag, known for performing simsimiya songs, derived from the musical heritage of Suez Canal cities, will give a concert Thursday, 24 October, at El-Dammah Theatre in Downtown Cairo.



Founded by simsimiya player Eman Heddo, Amwag's stated purpose is "to preserve the historical heritage and folklore of Port Said city."



"We started a year ago, and the band consists of eight girls of different ages with the talent of singing and dancing with passion and love to simsimiya. The band participated in several festivals inside and outside Egypt," stated Heddo.



Part of El-Mastaba Centre, El-Dammah Theatre is a performance hall of around 100 seats in the Abdeen district that provides a regular programme every Thursday night "of live performances of high artistic standards by the bands of El-Mastaba network with a focus on the simsimya and dammah traditions from the Suez Canal area, Rango music, Nubian music, Sufi spiritual music, Bedouin music, and Upper Egyptian traditional music."
