The Ministry of Agriculture announced that all precautionary measures were taken after news of a suspected case of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in northeastern Sudan was circulated in the media.

The minister of agriculture urged ministry officials to take the necessary measures to prevent the disease from entering the country, and to coordinate with the governors of border areas and the Ministry of Local Development.

The precautionary measures include restricting the movement of animals unless they were numbered and came with a registration card with immunisation date, raising the emergency degree at border laboratories of the Animal Health Research Institute, and vaccinating the infected animals in border areas adjacent to Sudan in order to provide a safe belt area against the disease.

According to the World Health Organisation, RVF is a viral zoonosis that primarily affects animals, but it can also infect humans. The disease can cause significant economic losses as it can cause death and abortion among RVF-infected livestock.
