Man United may be looking for a replacement for injured David De Gea

Manchester United are in talks with Ahly to sign the Pharoahs’ goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawi when the winter transfer window reopens in January, the Birmingham Mail reported on Thursday.

Man United are looking for a replacement for injured goalkeeper David De Gea, who received a muscle injury during Spain's 1-1 away game against Sweden in the Euro 2020 qualifiers on Tuesday and is expected to be side-lined for a few weeks.

The Premier League giants’ second-choice goalie, Sergio Romero, is the club's only back-up for De Gea, and is in line to start against Liverpool this weekend.

"If the report is true it is brilliant news and it will be suitable for El-Shennawi," Ahly's marketing advisor Adly El-Qei told the club's television programme.

"The only problem for Manchester United is the injury of De Gea and when he recovers he will be the regular goalkeeper.

"But if El-Shennawi produces superb performances as he can do it. Manchester could offload De Gea."

El-Shennawi, 30, has established himself as Egypt's first-choice goalie since the 2018 World Cup, when he took over from retiring icon Essam El-Hadary.

He grasped his chance with both hands and produced some impressive displays in Russia to cement his status, including a man-of-the-match performance in the opening 1-0 loss to Uruguay.

A 1.91m tall, he has a commanding presence in the air and is also hard to beat in on one-on-one situations.

Aston Villa and Arsenal were reportedly considering signing the Egyptian international over the summer.
