US President Donald Trump has said that talks his administration hosted in Washington between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan over a disputed dam project on Ethiopia's Blue Nile "went well."

"Just had a meeting with top representatives from Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan to help solve their long running dispute on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam," Trump said on Twitter on Wednesday night. "The meeting went well and discussions will continue during the day."

The talks, led byUS Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, come following a call by Egypt for an outside mediator after the latest round of talks between the three countries collapsed last month.

Major points of contention between Cairo and Addis Ababa include operating the dam, the rate of filling its reservoir and the draining process.

Cairo fears the giant $4 billion upstream project on Ethiopia's section of the Nile would drastically cut its water supply from the river.

Ethiopia says the dam, which is about 70 percent complete, is central to its economic development and its plan to be a regional power hub.
