The event, performed by the head of the Egyptian Association of Religious Hymns and Litanies, saw the gathering of many thousands and was broadcast live by some Egyptian TV channels
Many thousands of Egyptians gathered Saturday night in the courtyard of Al-Hussein Mosque, located in Cairo near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar, to celebrate the Moulid Al-Nabawy Islamic event.
The head of the Egyptian Association of Religious Hymns and Litanies Mahmoud ElTohamy chanted his folkloric repertoire of traditional poems praising Islam's Prophet Mohammed and his family.

Some local Egyptian TV channels made live broadcasts of the event that started later than scheduled due to unexpected crowds.
The well-known Islamic chanter ElTohamy, 40, who recently released an album of Islamic folk poetry in contemporary commercial pop arrangements, is keen to appear in Islamic Sufi moulid events across the country, as well as in cultural venues, experimenting with new ideas within his traditional genre.
The son of the pioneering Sufi chanter Shiekh Yassin ElTohamy started his career in his boyhood, following in the footsteps of his father, before widening the musical sound of Islamic chanting by collaborating with pop, rock and jazz artists, including Grammy Award winner Fathy Salama.

The Moulid Al-Nabawy celebration dates back to the Fatimid Caliphate in the 10th to 12th centuries AD, and is a celebration of the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday, on 12 Rabei Al-Awwal in the Islamic lunar calendar, which fell this year on 9 November.
