Two men sentenced to 5 years for accidentally killing boy with celebratory gunfire
An Egyptian criminal court has sentenced two men to five years in prison over the killing of a 13-year-old boy by a stray bullet more than two years ago, a judicial source said
Youssef El-Araby was struck in the head by a bullet from celebratory gunfire at a nearby wedding on the outskirts of Cairo in May 2017. He fell into a coma and died 12 days later.
On Wednesday, a Giza criminal court sentenced two men, a former police officer and the son of a former MP, to five years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and the unlicensed possession of firearms. The court also fined the defendants EGP 5,000 (approx. $310) each.
The men were initially handed seven-year sentences in absentia along with another defendant who was present at court.
The two turned themselves in to authorities in May and were given a retrial.
