The protocol, that centres on training and experience exchange, will be extended two more years, through 2021

The joint training protocol between the Egyptian Ministry of Interior and its Italian counterpart in the field of combating organised crime and illegal immigration was renewed for another two-year term, Egypt's interior ministry said Saturday.

The ministry statement said that in light of the success achieved during the 2018/2019 training protocol and the positive feedback received at the regional and international levels, the Italian partner requested the renewal of the training protocol for two years, 2020/2021.

"Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfik has instructed a delegation of the ministry to travel to Rome to participate in two events: the final workshop on the already finished training protocol, and the renewal ceremony of the protocol for another two-year term," the statement said.

The protocol was signed by Major General Ahmed Ibrahim, assistant minister and head of the Police Academy, representing the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, and the director of the Central Directorate for Immigration and Border Police of Italy's interior ministry, Massimo Bontempi.

"The renewal of the protocol comes from the continuous security cooperation ties between the Egyptian and Italian police and the historical and distinguished partnership relations between the two countries," the Egyptian ministry said.

According to the statement, it also comes within the framework of the strategy of the ministry to enhance aspects of cooperation and exchange of international expertise, given challenges in the region that require concerted efforts with all international organisations and institutions to combat various types of crimes, and develop relevant training programmes to do so.

Within the 2018/2019 training protocol, which the Police Research Centre at the Police Academy undertook to implement, security cadres of 22 African countries have been trained through courses in the fields of combating organised crime and illegal immigration.

Also under the 2018/2019 protocol, a number of workshops were also organised, aiming at exchanging experiences and unifying concepts and methods of combating criminal phenomena in Mediterranean countries.
