Ahly coach Rene Weiler rued his team's missed scoring chances despite securing the first win in the African Champions league group stage against Sudan's Al-Hilal, while heaping praise on his defence line.

The Reds atoned for their opening group-stage defeat against Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel to beat Al-Hilal 2-1 at home in the African prestigious tournament on Friday.

"We achieved our target and got three precious points from Al-Hilal match," the Swiss coach said in the press conference after the match.

"We dominated the match most of the time; wasting a lot of chances against the goal and sadly we conceded a goal."

"Defenders don't stick with the their position in modern football, but move forward. I think it is a must to do so as it helps the team a lot. I am happy with the defence line performance as this is modern football," he added.

After Friday's win, Ahly lie third in the group with three points, on level with second-placed Al-Hilal. Etoile, who also have three points but will face Zimbabwe's FC Platinum in the other group match on Saturday.

Ahly will be hosting FC Platinum in the third round on 27 December.
