AUC's Centre for Translation Studies celebrates 10th anniversary

The American University in Cairo's Centre for Translation Studies is celebrating its 10thanniversary by launching a book and holding a panel discussion on 10 December at 6pm at Oriental Hall, AUC Tahrir.

The book, 'In the Shoes of the Other: Interdisciplinary Essays in Translation from Cairo,' is a compilation of essays built around lectures delivered at the centre over the past 10 years, and is edited by Samia Mehrez, professor of Arabic Literature and director of the Centre for Translation Studies. The essays include research and testimonies by scholars, practitioners, activists, and artists from Egypt and the world who focus on Arabic and translation.

Writers include Denys Johnson D-Davies, late renowned translator of Naguib Mahfouz and Tayeb Saleh's works; Humphry Davies,translator of Arabic fiction, historical and classical texts; Adel El-Siwi, Egyptian artist; Tahia Abdel-Nasser,associate professor of English and Comparative Literature, AUC;Ferial Ghazoul,professor of English and comparative literature, AUC;Khaled Mattawa,Libyan poet, Arab-American writer, and a literary translator; Leila Aboulela, Sudanese writer; Khaled El-Khamissi, Egyptian novelist, writer and lecturer; Marcia Lynx Qualey, cultural journalist.

They also include Randa Aboubakr,professor of English and comparative literature, Cairo University;Rehab Saad El-Domiati, senior director of media relations, AUC; Rana Issa,assistant professor of translation studies, the American University of Beirut;Lisa Anderson, political scientist and former president of AUC; Elliott Colla,American scholar of the Middle East, specializing in Arabic literature and culture; Emad Abu Ghazi,professor of archival studies, Cairo University and former minister of culture; Mahmoud El-Lozy,actor, stage director, playwright, and professor of drama, AUC;Basheer El-Sibai,Egyptian poet and translator; Fawwaz Tarabulsi; Lebanese historian and writer; and others.

The book is divided into six parts: The Translator: Memories, Testimonies and Reflections; Translation, Migration, and Identity; Literary Translation: Challenges and Opportunities; On Carrying Across: Languages, Cultures, and Registers; Translation Across Disciplines; The Stage, the Screen, and the Languages In Between.

The speakers in the panel discussion are Lisa Anderson, former president of the American University in Cairo, Emad Abou Ghazi,professor of archival studies, Cairo University, and former minister of culture; Mona Baker, professor of translation studies and director of the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies, University of Manchester; England; Humphry Davies, translator of Arabic fiction, historical and classical texts;Anwar Moghith, professor of philosophy, Helwan University and director of the National Centre for Translation and Ferial Ghazoul, professor of English and comparative literature.
