Google marked what would have been the 98th birthday of late Iraqi singer Affifa Iskandar on Tuesday with a Google Doodle featuring the artist.
Born to a musical family 2 December 1931, El-Hefny’s versatile artistic life included a deep interest in Western classical music as well as a lifelong dedication to Arabic music.
Nicknamed Iraqi Blackbird, Iskandar’s repertoire extends to 1500 songs with the best known compositions being Ya aqqid alhajibayn, Ikhlas meni, Nem wa sadek sadri, Ya sokari ya assail, among many others.
She started singing at the age of five and performed in front of audience as a teenager, before reaching wide spread popularity in Europe and the USA.
Iskandar died of cancer on 21 October 2012.
Affifa Iskandar's Google Doodle is regional and can be viewed in North Africa and the Middle East.
