Egypt is following with "great concern" the current developments in Iraq and the Gulf region and the recent escalation in military force, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

In a short statement issued Wednesday evening, the foreign ministry called all parties involved in the current escalation in the Gulf region and Iraq not to get dragged into "vicious cycles of violence," and to consider the dire consequences of destabilising the region.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iranian forces fired missiles at military bases housing US troops in Iraq in retaliation for the US assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
