Egypt's health ministry says 6.5 million school students immunised against meningitis
According to the World Health Organisation, Egypt is not included in the African meningitis belt
The Ministry of Health said Thursday that as many as 6.5 million school students nationwide were vaccinated against meningitis during the current academic year.
The vaccination campaign comprised travelers to meningitis-hit countries, pilgrims and targeted segments to deter the spread of the bacterial virus in Egypt.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Egypt is not included in the African meningitis belt.
In addition, as many as 4.5 million primary school students were vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus diseases during the current academic year, according to health ministry spokesman KhaledMogahed. He added that some 16.5 million children were immunised against polio.
Earlier, reports denied that Egyptian school students were diagnosed with meningitis.
