Speaker of Egypt’s parliament Ali Abdel-Aal revealed in a plenary session on Monday morning that parliament will meet on Tuesday to vote on a new three-month extension of the country’s state of emergency.
Abdel-Aal said a quorum of two-thirds of MPs should be available to approve the extension.
“So, I hope that MPs and the heads of parliamentary coalitions will attend tomorrow’s meeting to take the vote,” said Abdel-Aal.
The last time parliament approved an extension of the state of emergency was on 4 November 2019. MPs voted in favour of approving a presidential decree extending the nationwide state of emergency for three months, beginning on 1am 27 October 2019.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly told MPs on 3 November that “the extension of the state of emergency is still necessary for Egypt as many dark forces still target the stability of the country and seek to exploit the current chaos and turmoil in neighbouring Arab countries like Libya and in the Middle East region to stir up troubles in the country, and so the Armed Forces and police should be ready at all times to stand up to these forces.”
Parliament’s defence and national security committee is expected to meet to prepare a report on the new extension so it can be discussed during tomorrow’s plenary meeting.
The current state of emergency was imposed in Egypt for the first time in April 2017 following two terrorist attacks that hit two churches, killing 46 people.
