Anonymous official at Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO) says 13 attacks on North Sinai gas pipeline since Mubarak's ouster have cost country some $166 million
Repeated attacks on the North Sinai pipeline carrying natural gas to Jordan and Israel have cost the Egyptian economy more than LE1 billion (roughly $166 million) in total, an official of the Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO) told Al-Ahram’s Arabic-language news portal on Wednesday.
The official, who insisted on anonymity, added that GASCO, which operates the pipeline, had already paid some LE100 million for repairs to the pipeline following earlier attacks. He also said that costs associated with securing the pipeline had risen by some LE10 million as a result of repeated bombings.
The pipeline was bombed on Monday for the 13th time since the ouster of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in February of last year.
The last time the gas pipeline was attacked was on 5 February.
