Zamalek have not forfeited African Super Cup game, says Egyptian FA

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) executive director Walid El-Attar has denied reports claiming that Zamalek are set to boycott the African Super Cup game scheduled to be played in Qatar on 14 February.

"It is not true that Zamalek refuse to play the game. The Egyptian Football Association received a letter from Zamalek explaining their concern over the trip to Doha. We referred the letter to the Confederation of African Football," El-Attar was quoted as saying in a statement on the EFA Twitter account.

Zamalek president Mortada Mansour has repeatedly affirmed that the team will not play the game due to the political rift between Egypt and Qatar, citing safety concerns for his team.

However, Zamalek TV channel announced earlier on Thursday that the team sent their squad list for the Super Cup game to the CAF.

In 2018, the CAF signed a three-year deal with Qatar to host the African Super Cup.

The Whites, who won the 2019 Confederation Cup, are set to play the 2019 African Champions League winners Esperance of Tunisia.

According to CAF regulations, Zamalek may face up to a three-year ban if they boycott the game.
