American University in Cairo to hold centennial celebrations next week

Two major events on Saturday and Monday will feature a runway show, an art exhibition, pop-up museums and other activities


The American University in Cairo (AUC) is celebrating the beginning of its second century by organising a vibrant programme of events next week at its New Cairo campus from15 to 19 February.

The celebration by the prestigious institution, which was founded in 1919, will feature two major events on Saturday and Monday promising a variety ofinteresting activities.

A community carnival will be held on Saturday, bringing a runway show titled '100 Years of Fashion Evolution,' street performances, a science and technology hub, archaeology labs and pop-up museums. The day will run from12pm to 5pm at the AUC's Bartlett Plaza.

The day will also feature an international food festival organised by the students, and a scavenger hunt through the campus. Local and regional public figures are expected to be among the carnival's attendees.

A special bus will take visitors from the gate of the AUC old campus in Downtown Cairo's Tahrir Square to the new campus and vice versa.

On Monday, meanwhile, Centennial Nightswill be held from 6pm to 9pm at AUC Park and Square, with an art exhibition showcasing the work of young talents from across the region and the world.

At night,the "AUC Portal will come to life with a 3D mapping experience, visualising the future of architecture under a moonlit sky." The event will end with spectacular fireworks.

AUC trustee Rana El-Kaliouby is scheduled to give a speech during the event about Artificial Intelligence, titled 'AI: Humanising Technology.'

A bus will be available at 4:30pm at the gate of the old campus and back.

This year, the AUC will focus on the future and its plans for the next 100 years,under the slogan 'Be the Future.'
