Tens of people have celebrated the Martyr’s Day in Egypt at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Friday in Cairo’s Nasr city.

The participants were mainly supporters of Egypt’s ruling military, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), which is set to step down in late June following the anticipated presidential elections.

They held aloft Egyptian flags as well as pro-SCAF banners, chanting slogans against some TV channels, which they accused of seeking to drive a wedge between the armed forces and the people.

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, SCAF’s head, had already laid a wreath at the Unknown Soldier Tomb on Thursday.

Tantawi has also ordered the commanders of the Egyptian armed forces to lay flowers the Unknown Soldier Tombs across the country.

The Martyr's Day commemorates the martyrdom of General Abdel Moneim Riyad , the late chief of Staff of the Egyptian armed forces who died on 9 March, 1969. Riyad and a number of his aides were killed in an Israeli mortar attack on the Egyptian front during the post-1967 war of attrition between the two countries.
