Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi offered condolences over the deaths from the coronavirus outbreak in Italy during a phone call on Wednesday with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

El-Sisi stressed Egypt's support for the government and people of Italy, and offered to provide any "possible support" to help the country, which is the scene of Europe's worst outbreak of the new coronavirus.

Italy, which went into an unprecedented lockdown on Tuesday, now has more than 10,100 confirmed cases of the fast-spreading virus and 631 deaths.

During the telephone conversation, El-Sisi and Conte discussed cooperation in light of the outcome of talks between the two leaders in Cairo in mid-January.

They also exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest, particularly the developments in Libya, where rival factions are fighting for control of the capital Tripoli.

The two leaders also discussed the latest developments in the investigation into the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in light of the current cooperation between investigators from both countries.

The Egyptian president "reaffirmed his full support for cooperation between the authorities of the two countries to reveal the circumstances of the case," the statement added.
