Eighteen people died when a truck, loaded with construction material and travelling at high speed, smashed into 15 vehicles on Wednesday night
Egyptian prosecution ordered the four-day detention of a truck driver over a deadly accident that left 18 people dead in Giza on Wednesday, a judicial source told Ahram Online on Thursday.
The multi-vehicle accident on a stretch of the ring road occurred when a trailer-truck travelling at high speed plowed into as many as 15 vehicles, only after the country’s nighttime curfew took effect. The vehicles, which included microbuses, trucks and cars, were lined up at a checkpoint to be inspected by officers.
Some 20 people were injured in the crash.
The prosecution also ordered the driver be tested for drugs.
Deadly road accidents take place near daily in Egypt due to poor road safety, badly maintained infrastructure, and loosely enforced traffic regulations.
Over 3,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in Egypt in 2018, according to the country’s official statistics agency CAPMAS.
