Factbox: Egypt’s capabilities in facing coronavirus in numbers

As some readers might feel overwhelmed by the available online news about the coronavirus, Ahram Online has compiled a list of some of the most important figures about Egypt’s capabilities and efforts to contain the spread of the virus


Egypt has 1,560 confirmed coronavirus cases nationwide, including 103 fatalities.



88 percent of the first 1,000 coronavirus cases have displayed minor symptoms.



To date, Egypt has 10 functioning quarantine hospitals, and more have already been prepared.



Egypt has 3,000 to 4,000 ventilators in its isolation hospitals and 11,000 ICU beds nationwide.



91 percent of coronavirus cases have received medical care in regular hospital rooms, while the rest have received treatment in ICUs.



Of the 9 percent ICU cases, only 4 percent have needed ventilators, and the other 5 percent received treatment in ICUs without the need for ventilators.



The Armed Forces have equipped 22 military hospitals nationwide to serve as quarantine hospitals, with a capacity of 4,000 beds to receive both civilians and military personnel.



The military has also set up four mobile field hospitals, with 502 quarantine beds, ICUs and operating rooms.



The higher education ministry has allocated 33 buildings to serve as isolation hospitals at the universities of Cairo, Alexandria, Ain Shams, Assiut, Mansoura, Minya, and Helwan as a first phase, with 5,828 rooms capable of serving 11,304 individuals.



Egypt has 27 central laboratories to perform coronavirus tests, in addition to four university labs.



Egypt has conducted 25,000 coronavirus tests so far, andhas increased its capacity to around 2,000 tests daily.



The health ministry received 477,257 inquiries in March about the coronavirus pandemic through its 105 and 15335 hotlines through 300 operators, including English-speakingones.



The army has set up production lines for facemasks and protective suits with a capacity of 100,000 masks and 1000 suits daily, while maintaining reserves of 5 million masks. Some 50,000 suits are planned to be produced.



Military hotels and clubs nationwide are being prepared to serve as quarantine facilities if necessary.



Egypt has strategic reserves sufficient for six months.



Egypt has wheat stocks sufficient for 3.5 months of consumption, rice and pasta reserves enough for at least four months, vegetable oil reserves for almost six months, and sugar for 8.6 months.
