Egyptian filmmaker Marouan Omara will hold an online discussion on Thursday 14 May around the topic of "Borders as a source of creativity in filmmaking", held in cooperation with 6 Bab Sharq, a newly launched arts and culture space in Alexandria.

Born in 1987, Omara is an Egyptian director, video artist and photographer. After studying filmmaking at the Art and Technology of Cinema Academy, he went on to obtain his Bachelor's degree in applied arts from Helwan University in 2011. He initially directed several short films, including Taxi in 2008, a film about the societal expectations placed on women, and The Doll, in 2011, a film about arranged marriage.

His more recent works include the mid-length documentaries Crop (2013), Azziara (2015), and his film One Plus One Makes a Pharaoh’s Chocolate Cake, which had its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival (2017). The film follows a musical collaboration between Egyptian shaabi music artist Islam Chipsy and Swiss electronic musician Aisha Devi.

Omara worked as a film instructor at the German University in Cairo and an adjunct professor for film production at the American University in Cairo.

He participated as a founder/advisor for many other film educational programs such as CineDelta and since 2017, Omara is the managing director of the Regional Conference for Arab Independent Cinema – RCAIC.
