Recent aggression on Libya poses real threat to regional security: Egypt's FM
MENA, Tuesday 23 Jun 2020

The recent direct aggression on Libya has led to unprecedented escalation that poses a real threat to regional stability, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Tuesday.

"This aggression cannot be left undeterred," Shoukry added in his speech during an extraordinary Arab League session held today via videoconferencing at the level of foreign ministers.

He noted that "when Egypt discloses its various options in dealing with the Libyan crisis, this must be taken with due seriousness."

Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt's firm position in support of an all-out political settlement that preserves Libya's unity and territorial integrity, while working for restoring the country's state institutions to bring back stability to Libya and attain the aspirations of the Libyan people.

From this standpoint, Egypt has always sought to bring closer the points of view between the conflict parties to bridge the gap between them through all diplomatic means, Shoukry pointed out.

He added that, in pursuance of this vision, Egypt has played a major role in all international initiatives aimed at bringing about a political solution to the crisis in Libya.

Egypt has also embraced the intra-Libyan political initiative dubbed "Cairo Declaration", which was launched on June 6 under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to end the conflict in Libya in accordance with the Berlin Conference conclusions and relevant international resolutions, Shoukry added during the Arab League’s virtual meeting.

He also highlighted Egypt's serious efforts to ensure the successful implementation of the political and economic reforms adopted during the Berlin conference on Libya and resumption of the 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission (JMC) talks under UN sponsorship.

Shoukry said that the incessant direct foreign interference in Libya, by deploying mercenaries from Syria and supporting terrorist militias, undermine the country's internal security and stability, warning that its destabilizing consequences often spill over to neighboring countries across the Arab and Mediterranean regions.

He emphasized the urgent need for consolidated efforts to put an end to such interference and subversive policies that threaten regional as well as international peace and security.
