Social media app TikTok said on Thursday it removed more than 49 million videos from its platform in the second half of last year for violating its guidelines.

These videos accounted for less than 1% of the total posted on the platform and fell under categories such as "violent and graphic content, hate speech and adult nudity", it said in a report released on its website.

"Our systems proactively caught and removed 98.2% of those videos before a user reported them. And of the total videos removed, 89.4% were taken down before they received any views" the report read.

It added, 25.5% of the removed videos fell under the category of adult nudity and sexual activities, 24.8% violated minor safety policies, which include content depicting harmful, dangerous, or illegal behavior, 15.6% violated our suicide, self-harm, and dangerous acts policy, 8.6% violated our violent and graphic content policy; 3% fell under harassment and bully and less than 1% violated our policies on hate speech, integrity and authenticity.

The report clarified that the five markets with the largest volumes of removed videos are India, United States, Pakistan, United Kingdom and Russia.
