Around 912 candidates have submitted nomination bids for the upcoming Senate elections slated for August, National Elections Authority (NEA) chief Ibrahim Lashin said ahead of announcing the initial list of candidates Sunday.

According to statements by the state-run MENA news agency Saturday, Lashin said that the number includes both closed-list and individual system candidates. He said that the NEA’s inspection committees were currently reviewing documents submitted by candidates to ensure they meet candidacy requirements.

The NEA will announce the initial list of candidates Sunday, providing two documents of names of all those seeking candidacy through the closed-list system and the individual system with their electoral symbols for three days until Tuesday.

Administrative courts would begin receiving election appeals in the same period, he said.

Senate elections are set to take place 11-12 August, with Egyptians abroad scheduled to cast their ballots 9-10 August.

The results of the first round of voting will be announced 19 August.

Second round votes will be on 8-9 September, while the results will be announced 16 September, the NEA said.

The Senate will have 300 seats, one third of which will be elected via the individual candidacy system, another third through the closed party list system, and the final third to be named by the president.

Senate members' tenure is set at five years.

Senate elections will be followed by House of Representatives elections.
