Egypt on Saturday reported 116 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections nationwide to 96,336 cases since the detection of the first case in mid-February.

Egypt's daily tally of new coronavirus cases has declined steadily in recent weeks with the daily toll hovering between 110 and 178 cases, despite the recent lifting of many lockdown measures.

The ministry said in the statement that it recorded 17 new deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities from the respiratory virus to 5,141.

The health ministry statement added that 977 patients had recovered and been released from isolation hospitals on Saturday, bringing the total number of recoveries so far to 58,835.
