After receiving a pardon from the army, Ayman Nour will submit his papers as a presidential candidate on 6 April

Egyptian politician Ayman Nour has announced that he will officially present his candidacy papers to the Higher Presidential Elections Commission (HPEC) next Friday.

Nour, who heads the liberal El-Ghad Thawra Party, had been banned from politics since being convicted of forging signatures to secure the formation of the liberal Al-Ghad Party in 2005.

In 2011 he made an attempt to overturn the conviction but failed. Egyptian law bans any candidates with a criminal record from running for president. However, the military council gave him an official pardon on Wednesday.

Nour announced that he will hold a press conference Thursday morning to outline his electoral platform.

Nour previously ran for the presidency against ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2005, coming second. To run now, Nour requires either 30,000 recommendations from 15 different governorates, the recommendations of 30 MPs, or to be registered as a party candidate before 8 April.
