The Cinema Club of Jesuit will return to public activities on Saturday 10 October by hosting acclaimed Egyptian director Amr Bayoumi for a discussion over his award-winning documentary film 'Where did Ramses Go?'
"For social distancing purposes, the Cinema Club of Jesuit will screen the film twice; on Saturday and Monday," the event organisersannounced.
The free event will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, whose is known for his feature film Al-Gesr (1997), which starred late actor Mahmoud Morsi.
'Where did Ramses Go?' premiered last year at the 21st edition of the Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentaries and Shorts, receiving acclaim from some of the country's best-known critics, as well as winning the festival's most important award, the Best Long Documentary prize.
In the film, Bayoumi uses precious footage he recorded himself during the 2006 relocation of a statue of Ramses II from the Cairo square of the same name, where the statue had stood since 1955.
“It’s not an attempt to answer the question. It’s an impressionist approach to the history of Egypt since the 1950s from a personal perspective,” Bayoumi told Ahram Online during the film's premiere.
The film takes glimpses of Egypt’s history since the 1950s through to the revolution of 2011 through archive photos and newspaper headlines, and skilfully weaves them into the director’s life story.
The Cinema Club of Jesuit activities, which include screenings, discussions and workshops, had been halted for over six months due to the country's lockdown over the COVID-19 pandemic.
The return of cultural cinema events in Cairo will kick-off on Saturday with the Award-winning film You Will Die at Twenty at the Cairo Opera House, and on Wednesday at the AUC 's Tahrir Art (TCC) Centre, marking the return of activities for the Artistic Creativity Centre, the African Cinema Club, the TCC and El-Gouna Film Festival.
