Egyptian forward Mohamed Zidan came on as a second-half substitute but Mainz surrendered their lead to suffer a 4-1 defeat by Stuttgart in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.

Andreas Ivanschitz converted a penalty after three minutes to put Mainz in front but Tamas Hajnal restored parity four minutes later.

A second-half brace from Vedad Ibisevic and a penalty from Zdravko Kuzmanovic condemned Mainz to their ninth loss of the season.

Zidan, who made an impressive start to his third Mainz spell by scoring six goals in consecutive matches, started on the bench for the second successive match after coach Thomas Tuchel opted not to introduce him in last week’s 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen.

He replaced Ivanschitz seven minutes past the hour mark but Stuttgart still managed to claim all three points.
