Egypt is "closely" following up on investigations into an assault against an Egyptian citizen in Jordan, a statement by the Ministry of Emigration and Expatriate Affairs said on Tuesday, a few hours after footage went viral on social media showing a group of people attacking the man.

The three-minute video shows the man being dragged across the street from his workplace and beaten by five people using canes and bladed weapons.

A dispute between the Egyptian citizen and his Jordanian neighbour prompted the attack, which took place in late September, Egyptian ambassador to Jordan Sherif Kamel said in the statement.

Kamel added that the Egyptian embassy has contacted the victim and instructed a lawyer to represent him.

Egyptian Emigration Minister Nabila Makram has hailed the efforts of the Jordanian authorities in investigating the case, the statement added.

The incident comes two months after another Egyptian was shot dead in Jordan by a Jordanian citizen.

Egyptians living abroad are estimated at 13 million, according to earlier statements by Egypt's Emigration Minister Nabila Makram.

Some 65 percent of Egyptian expats live in Arab countries, according to figures released by Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in 2017.
