The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that it has called for an emergency video conference meeting on Monday after Gabon’s national team were forced to spend Sunday night sleeping in Banjul airport.

The team arrived in Banjul on Sunday to face Gambia in a vital Africa Cup of Nations qualifier scheduled for Monday, where they were informed that they were not allowed to leave the airport due to an administrative issue. As a result, the Gabonese team slept on the floor before they were allowed to leave the airport on Monday morning.

After the incident went viral on social media when Arsenal’s Gabonese striker Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang criticised the CAF in a tweet, the organisation called for an emergency video conference to address the incident.

“During the call, the secretary-general of CAF clearly deplored this unfortunate situation before informing the two parties of his decision that a disciplinary commission will examine the causes of this incident so as to determine who was responsible and apply the consequent sanctions,” read a press release published on CAF’s official website.

Gabon are leading Group D in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers with seven points after playing three games, while Gambia are in second place with four points. The group also includes DR Congo, who have three points, and Angola with a single point.
