Classes at Cairo University and Benha University will also be cancelled, while Ain Shams University said its classes would be normally held

Governors of Cairo, Giza and Qalioubiya have cancelled classes on Thursday at the governorates’ schools, as well as two public universities; Cairo University and Benha University, amid bad and unstable weather predictions.

Cairo-based Ain Shams University announced, however, that classes on Thursday would be normally held, indicating that it would not be included in the suspension decision.

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has predicted a three-day wave of unstable weather starting Wednesday, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in some areas of the country.

Cold weather and moderate rainfall are expected in Greater Cairo, including the northern governorates of Cairo, Giza and Qalioubiya, over the upcoming three days, the EMA added on Monday.

A statement by the Giza governorate’s office on Wednesday said the decision to cancel classes comes to ensure the safety of students and allow state authorities to immediately deal with repercussions of unstable weather conditions.

The Qalioubiya governorate said its decision to suspend school classes includes only students.

School activities in Alexandria, Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Damietta, Daqahliya and Matrouh were cancelled on Wednesday.

Last week, many governorates across the country, especially those along the coasts, were hit by inclement weather, which caused flooding and damaged at least two buildings in Alexandria, resulting in six deaths and several injuries.

Concerning Friday, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in some areas of the north coast, while Lower Egypt is forecast to see moderate rainfall. Schools, universities and most of the other public and private institutions in Egypt already take Fridays off.
