Court sentences Brotherhood figure Hassan El-Brens to prison over illicit gains charges

A court in Alexandria sentenced on Monday the former deputy to the governor of Alexandria and Muslim Brotherhood member Hassan El-Brens to three months in prison for illicit gains.

The criminal court found El-Brens guilty of using his position as a deputy governor to acquire illicit gains that amount to EGP 2.5 million in a case that goes back to 2014.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Justice's Illicit Gains Authority referred the former leading MB member to the criminal court over illicit gains charges

El-Brens was arrested for inciting violence in August 2013 after the ouster of late Islamist President Mohamed Morsy.

In December 2013, the Egyptian government designated the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.

In September 2018, a court in Alexandria sentenced El-Brens to five years in prison on charges related to illegal assembly, murder, and incitement of riots.
