This year’s Science Film Festival was held virtually, due to the coronavirus pandemic
The closing event of the Science Film Festival 2020, organised by the Goethe Institute, took place a couple of days ago in the form of a discussion with Dr Sherif El-Bassiouny, associate professor of neuroscience and biomedical engineering and the director of Neuroengineering Education and Research Unit in the School of Medicine at Wright State University. The discussion was moderated by Ashraf Amin, head of the Science Department at Al-Ahram newspaper, and live-streamed on the Facebook page of the Goethe Institute Cairo.

Regional director of the Goethe Institute in the Middle East and North Africa Susanne Höhn expressed her gratitude that the festival could be held this year. “We are extremely glad that we could successfully organise the Science Film Festival online this year for the first time. A lot of people were interested in our events. We previously used to organise the events at schools, at different locations in small towns and cities, in order to encourage children and the younger generation to talk about scientific topics. However, due to the current situation, we succeeded in presenting the events, screening movies, and moderated discussions, while reaching a wider audience, via our virtual activities.”
In the framework of the current year’s festival, more than 20 different events and workshops were held in cooperation with Youthinkgreen and Funlab.
The Science Film Festival is a celebration of science communication in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. In cooperation with local partners, it promotes science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through international films with accompanying educational activities.
The festival presents scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be fun. The event has grown considerably since its first edition in 2005, becoming the largest event of its kind worldwide.
